Allotments

In Bath & North East Somerset there are 38 allotment sites scattered around the area.

"My Lords, the Government recognise the importance of allotment gardening for food provision, recreation and the sustainable regeneration of towns and cities. ... the Government are aware of the value of allotments to the whole community, as well as to the individuals who use them."

Baroness Hayman, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State,  April 11, 1998

The Council is responsible for 20 sites in Bath. Outside the city of Bath responsibility for allotments remains with other local bodies, such as Parish Councils. Where possible we try to identify these bodies to allow easier access to the allotment facilities.

We have split the sites over two sections

Notes
  • Allotment vacancy data correct to October 2008.  Applicants may request that their names are added to the waiting list for their two nearest sites.  Unfortunately although some sites may appear to have vacant plots, these will be either on offer to the person at the top of the waiting list, being brought up to standard by current tenant or pending eviction.

Bath city allotments - size & costs

The organic allotments at Lower Common

The average size of an allotment plot in Bath is 125 square metres, & generally plots range from 50m2 to 150m2.  If either of the two sites nearest to your home address (see above) has spaces free, please email or call us to find out more. Please indicate the site you are interested in, and your address (so we can send you site maps, & ultimately tenancy agreements).

If neither of the two sites nearest your home address has vacant plots, please complete and return the application form so that your name can be added to these waiting lists.  By promoting more local use of allotments we aim to reduce the carbon footprint.  You will not be allocated a plot further afield unless there is a good reason for your request.  We will need to know the name of your two nearest allotment sites (from the list above).  Also your name, full postal address, telephone number and date of birth. If you plan to have a joint tenancy with a friend or relative their name will also need to be added to the waiting list.

As of September 2008, the annual rent for a plot 125m2 is  £32.20 - prices vary according to size.

A discount of 50% (upon proof of entitlement - e.g. diamond card/student card) is available to senior citizens (over 60), registered disabled persons, full time students and those in receipt of income support, job seekers allowance or working tax credit.

All allotment sites have piped water, except Lyncombe Vale allotments. There is a stream running through that provides enough water. This means that there is no water supply charge on any plots within Lyncombe Vale

Other allotments (not maintained by Bath & North East Somerset)

Please be aware that priority is given to people living within the parish or close by. Consequently, though a waiting list may be only two people, if you live outside the parish and others who live closer apply after you, they will be given a plot before you.

The sites have differing amenities, for example, Farrington Gurney allotments have water butts to supply water, yet Farmborough have a water supply & even supply manure at an extra £5 a year.

Notably, the Bathford allotments are one of the earliest in the country. Created in 1876 for the "Labouring Poor" in exchange for some Glebe land, they have been central to village life ever since.

If you have an allotment site not mentioned below, please contact me with the pertinent details.
